Knight Errant is a novel by John Jackson Miller set in the Old Republic era . It is not an adaptation of the comic series , but a new story depicting the origins of the rivalry between the Sith Lords Odion and Daiman , taking place five or six weeks after Aflame . [3] The first paperback run of the novel includes a full-color 16-page excerpt from the comic. It is also Miller's first professional novel.

The Republic is in crisis. The Sith roam unchecked, vying with one another to dominate the galaxy. But one lone Jedi , Kerra Holt , is determined to take down the Dark Lords. Her enemies are strange and many: Lord Daiman , who imagines himself the creator of the universe; Lord Odion , who intends to be its destroyer; the curious siblings Quillan and Dromika ; the enigmatic Arkadia . So many warring Sith weaving a patchwork of brutality—with only Kerra Holt to defend the innocents caught underfoot.

Sensing a sinister pattern in the chaos, Kerra embarks on a journey that will take her into fierce battles against even fiercer enemies. With one against so many, her only chance of success lies with forging alliances among those who serve her enemies—including a mysterious Sith spy and a clever mercenary general . But will they be her adversaries or her salvation?

By the beginning of the novel, Jedi Knight Kerra Holt attempts to kill Lord Daiman even as the psychotic Sith does battle with his vicious brother, Lord Odion , at the Battle of Gazzari . However, Kerra decides to save the lives of the innocent people who were in the midst of combat with the help of Jarrow Rusher .

Following their departure from Gazzari , Kerra, Jarrow, and the others find themselves arriving on a world ruled over by the Sith siblings Qullian and Dromika . Kerra manages to snap their hold over this world just as the forces of Arkadia Calimondra arrive so they can collect their leader's cousins.

Dark Horse is in the middle of a major overhaul of its Star Wars lineup. Long-running series like Knights of the Old Republic and Legacy have either concluded or are ending soon. And naturally, new books are being introduced to fill the void.

John Jackson Miller wrote KOTOR for the entirety of its 50-issue run. Though that series wrapped up in February, Miller has remained very busy in the realm of Star Wars . His newest project is a series called Star Wars: Knight Errant . Set about 1000 years before the prequel movies, Knight Errant follows a new Jedi heroine as she embarks on a guerrilla campaign against the Sith. The series launches in October. Accompanying the comic will be a Knight Errant novel, also written by Miller, that will hit bookstores in January 2011.

We chatted with Miller via e-mail about the premise of his new series, how Kerra Holt compares to other Jedi heroes, and how his novel will connect to the events of the comic series.

IGN Comics: Can you set the stage for this era of the Star Wars galaxy? Where in the timeline does Knight Errant fall? What state is the Old Republic in at this point?

John Jackson Miller: Knight Errant is set a thousand years before Episode I: The Phantom Menace , in a period that's regarded as one of the darkest times for the Republic. Under pressure from a large number of Sith Lords and beset with plague, the Republic has cut off wide swaths of the galaxy from its protection. People on countless worlds have been left to the non-existent mercy of the Sith.

At home, the Jedi are doing their best to keep up the defenses, but not everybody is willing to let the people on the Outer Rim fend for themselves. Kerra Holt belongs to a loose-knit group of Jedi volunteers devoted to making hit-and-run raids into Sith space. They know they're unable to change the overall strategic picture much, but they think it's important to show the flag and remind the people out there that there is still hope, that there is still good in the galaxy.

More than one thousand years before Luke Skywalker, a dark age grips the galaxy as an ineffectual Republic abandons entire systems to Sith control. A newly knighted Jedi on her first mission, eighteen-year-old Kerra Holt has joined a band of Jedi volunteers traveling deep behind enemy lines, with no support from the Republic and little chance of survival. She thinks she is prepared for anything. She is sorely mistaken.
